The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has updated the situation with oysters and MSX on the Island. More PEI sites have been placed under quarantine after the discovery of the parasite that affects oysters, but is no harm to people. The PEI Aquaculture Alliance website says that samples from 3 of 10 sites tested by the CFIA were positive for MSX. The results are so far just presumed positive but there will be more testing. In the meantime, all leases that were linked to the movement of oysters from Bedeque Bay in 2023 and or 2024 have now been placed under quarantine. MSX doesn’t pose a threat to humans, so the affected oysters are still safe to eat. The parasite can slow the growth of oysters and kill some of them. PEI’s Fisheries Minister has said the province is prepared to provide support to the Oyster Industry.
