A tragedy on the highways at Christmas is hitting Islanders hard with sadness as evident on social media.
A head-on collision on Route 2 in Marshfield on Friday evening left three young people dead and two critically injured.
RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision just after 6.00 on Friday night. The early investigation shows that a pickup truck hit a car head-on when it pulled into oncoming traffic.
The Mounties say a young man and a woman, both 18, and a 12 year old in the car died from their injuries, while a teenage boy in the vehicle and a passenger of the pickup truck were seriously injured.
Police say a 20-year-old man from York was arrested on suspicion of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and impaired operation of a vehicle causing death. The accused will be going to court to answer to charges.
Island EMS, the North Shore Fire Department, the Department of Transportation and Provincial Coroner attended the scene along with police.
Family and friends of the victims of the horrific crash have taken to social media to speak about the young people involved. A single mom has lost two sons. A third is in the ICU in Halifax. And a young woman has also lost her life. They were travelling to a youth group event on Friday.
A marked RCMP vehicle with its lights flashing and siren blaring was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the Charlottetown bypass near Mount Edward Road while heading toward the crash. There were no injuries. Charlottetown Police are investigating.
