Holland College has announced that it will increase the number of students in its Carpentry program by twelve seats for this coming September. PEI’s population growth, due in large part to immigration, has led to record low vacancy levels across the province. This, coupled with skilled labour shortages and expanded investments in housing incentives for developers, has created a significant gap in the number of workers required in the construction sector. Holland College President, Dr. Sandy MacDonald says the impetus to increase seats in the Carpentry program is a direct response to calls from industry and government to look at ways of attracting more skilled workers to the Island’s construction sector.
