Typos and small mistakes led to thousands of people on the Island failing the Canadian Red Cross’s online process for financial help following Hurricane Fiona.
Emails obtained through access to information show about 30 percent of Islanders who applied for money ended up having to verify their identity in person after mistakes such as entering incorrect birth dates or postal codes.
That led to long lineups and short tempers as people sought help in the aftermath of the September 24th storm.
As public frustration grew, the province’s Department of Social Development and Housing pitched in to help verify those who didn’t get accepted for the funding.
