The opening of the 2023 Canada Games was held last night at the Eastlink Centre with hundreds of athletes and coaches from all over Canada parading into the venue. PEI was led by flag bearers Ella Lenentine and Ryan Dwyer. The spectacular show lasted about two hours.
Over 300 performers entertained the capacity crowd.
A new 10-foot high cauldron will be lit on Sunday to begin the games. The Canadian designed cauldron was fabricated by Charlottetown Metal Products. It will be on display at Founder’s Food Hall and Market and will be lit at 1.45 this afternoon during the opening of the IllumiNATION Festival.
The competition begins today. PEI opens men’s hockey where Ontario is favoured and Quebec is defending champion. PEI is in Group C and plays the Territories, favoured to win that group. That game is at 4.00 in O’Leary. In curling Ella Lenentine plays Nova Scotia at 10 this morning in Summerside.
