A pair of Prince Edward Island teams are on a mission to win a medal at the national baseball championships today.
The Island is in the playoffs at the Under 13 and Under 15 boys.
PEI has won only two medals in the past taking a silver in the 1977 National Senior mens and bronze in the 2015 National bantams.
PEI coached by Bob Doyle is in the semi-finals in the Canadian Under 13 baseball championship in Quebec. PEI lost 13-3 to Ontario-2 to finish the preliminaries at 2-2 and will play Ontario-1 in today’s playoff game.
The Island is also semi-final bound in the Under 15’s.
PEI blanked New Brunswick, 10-0 to go 4-1 at the National Under 15’s in Oshawa, Ontario. Declan Campbell had a big game with 3 singles and 3 RBIs.
The Island team then advanced to the semi-finals this morning with BC by dropping host Oshawa, 7-1 in the quarter-final.
PEI will meet New Brunswick for 11th place at the Under 16 girls Invitational in Bedford, Nova Scotia. PEI lost 14-7 to Newfoundland-Labrador and is 1-3.
UPDATE: PEI lost 8-6 to Ontario-1 and plays Ontario-2 for the bronze in the Under 13’s.
PEI lost 3-2 to BC in the Under 15’s and plays Manitoba for bronze.
The Island girls lost 18-6 to New Brunswick and finish in 12th place in the Under 16 Invitational.
The Toronto Blue Jays used a 4 run 7th and home runs from Toscar Hernandez and Bo Bichette to end a six game losing streak as they came back to beat Seattle, 7-5. Bichette had 3 RBIs.
Kenley Janson survived a nervous 9th by striking out the side with the bases loaded as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the NY Yankees, 2-1.
Boston got by San Diego, 5-4 on a 9th inning home run from Brock Holt. The Red Sox are six out in the Wild Card race.
Nickolas Kingsbury-Fournier scored the game winner at 13.18 of the third as the Acadie-Bathurst Titan got by the Charlottetown Islanders, 4-2 in preseason Q hockey action in Cornwall. Evan MacKinnon iced it with an empty netter. Justin Gill and Max Chisholm scored for the Isles who are 1-3 in exhibition games.The Islanders released 13 players from training camp to make way for the veterans who have their first practice today.
Canadian Brooke Henderson is two back of the co-leaders entering the final round of the CP Canadian Women’s Open in golf in Aurora, Ontario. She had 29 on the back nine and finished the day at 65 and is 16-under par.
Co-leaders Jin Young Ko and Nicole Broch Larsen are 18-under.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are 8-2 in the CFL after winning by a field goal, 13-10 over the BC Lions.
Saskatchewan ripped Ottawa, 40-18.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has announced his retirement at age 29. Luck who has been injured often says he’s been playing in pain for four years with various injuries.

Rose Run Quest won the Saturday night feature at Red Shores in Charlottetown in 1.54/3. Gillies Barrieau was behind for the win. He drove four winners on the night. Jason Hughes had a driving triple.

The Kings County Baseball League has Stratford at Peakes and the Grant Thornton Tigers in Cardigan. Both games at 2.00.
Former major league star Matt Stairs is the special guest for tonight’s Morell Sportsman’s Dinner at the Links at Crowbush Cove. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick Stairs played with Montreal and Toronto among other big league teams during his career and has been a batting coach and broadcaster in recent years.
Eddie Smith of Peakes will receive special recognition during the dinner for his involvement in baseball in Kings County for over 50 years.
