Summerside Fire Chief Jim Peters will retire as of June 1st.
He announced his retirement on Friday after serving 47 years as a firefighter and 38 years as the Chief of the Summerside Fire Department.
His father and brother were also firefighters.
Deputy Chief Tom Peters will take over on an interim basis until the city fills the position.
Mayor Basil Stewart has praised Jim Peters for his long standing service to the citizens of Summerside.
He says Peters built the Summerside Fire Department and Fire Service into the envy of the Maritimes.
