The UPEI men’s hockey Panthers are headed to the AUS semi-finals sweeping the Moncton Blue Eagles 2 straight in the opening round. The Panthers blanked Moncton, 4-0 last as Gabe Guertler, Beau McCue and Riley Whittingham scored 3 times in a span of just a minute and 22 seconds in the 1st period. Matt Mancina picked up a 29 save shutout.
UPEI advances to the conference semi-finals and will meet either first place UNB or second place Saint Mary’s depending on the outcome of the final game in the Acadia-St. F.X. quarter-final today in Antigonish. That series is tied, 1-1.

The Maritime leading Halifax Mooseheads blanked the Charlottetown Islanders, 3-0 in the Q for their 4th straight win. Raphael Lavoie scored twice and Jared MacIsaac found an empty net to sew up the win. The Islanders have lost 6 of their last 7. Alex Gravel got his 3rd shutout of the season. The Mooseheads win 7 of 8 meetings with the Isles this year as they prepare to host the Memorial Cup in May. The Islanders visit Acadie-Bathurst on Thursday night and return home to play Blainville on Saturday in a re-match of the Q semi-finals last spring.

The Campbellton Tigers surprised the high scoring Summerside Western Capitals with a 5-0 shutout win at Credit Union Place in the MHL.

Toronto had an off night losing 2-0 in Arizona in the NHL despite 35 shots on goal. Darcy Kuemper made 35 saves for the shutout.
Tampa Bay shutout Montreal, 3-0. Andrei Vasilevsky with the goose egg.
Ottawa surprised Winnipeg, 4-3 in overtime. Ryan Dzingel scored the winner.
Las Vegas over Nashville, 5-1.

Suzanne Birt’s PEI rink began the Scotties in Sydney, Nova Scotia with a bang ripping Newfoundland-Labrador’s Kelli Sharpe, 14-3. PEI plays the Wild Card team from Alberta skipped by Casey Schiedegger this afternoon.

UPEI is still half game behind first place Cape Breton in AUS women’s basketball but won again, 77-65 over visiting Acadia. Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 16 points and Karla Yepez added 15 for UPEI. The Panthers now 16-2. The Capers downed St. F.X., 71-52.
The men’s team also won , 91-85 over the Axemen. Milo Sedlarevic led the way with 25 points. UPEI now 5-13.

Highly touted rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made his spring training debut at the Toronto Blue Jays main camp on Saturday and immediately wowed reporters who gatthered by the batting cage to watch him send line drives over the outfield fence. The 19-year is being predicted to be a top 10 hitter in the American League although he is not likely to get his big league start until mid-April for contract reasons.
