Last Friday, an Island man was sentenced in Charlottetown Provincial Court to five years in custody for taking a hostage without the use of a firearm. He also received additional concurrent sentences: four months for uttering threats, two months for mischief, six months for assault with a weapon, and six months for attempting to escape lawful custody. Charges of forcible confinement and a probation order were stayed. The charges stem from an incident August 1, 2024, at the Provincial Correctional Facility in which the man, an inmate, grabbed an employee and threatened them with a piece of glass in an attempt to escape. Another inmate intervened and helped correctional staff regain control. The employee was not injured.
