The spring sitting of PEI Legislature opened Tuesday with the Speech from the Throne, read by the Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Wassim Salamoun. Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. The Speech outlines government’s priorities for the coming months, and highlights include:
- securing the economy by reducing interprovincial trade barriers; doubling the number of trade missions; exploring the development of a shipping port; and tax cuts for businesses.
- in healthcare, open two new patient medical homes in 2025; explore community-based surgical models to reduce wait times and free up hospital capacity; and launch a Practice Ready Assessment Centre to support internationally trained physicians.
- with infrastructure, government will push for long-term federal funding to support roads and bridges; and complete high-speed internet access for the final 2,800 homes and expand cell service across PEI.
Before the Speech from the Throne, the first order of business for the spring sitting was the election of a Speaker. In a secret ballot vote, MLAs voted to select Morell-Donagh MLA Sidney MacEwen as Speaker. He had been serving as Deputy Speaker.
