The No. 6-seeded UPEI Men’s Basketball Panthers upset the host, and No.3 seed, UBC Thunderbirds 90-72 Thursday night to advance to the U SPORTS national semifinals for the first time in program history. Kamari Scott led the way with 21 points. The Panthers now face No. 2 ranked Calgary Friday night in a semi-final, while Victoria faces Ottawa in the other semifinal.
The Charlottetown Islanders are in action Friday night in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, battling the Titan in Bathurst.
The Maritime Junior Hockey League playoffs get underway this weekend. On Saturday, the Summerside Western Capitals host the Pictou County Weeks Crushers in Game 1 of their best-of-7 series.
PEI’s Ellen MacNearney has won a gold medal in the 7.5km Cross Country event at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Ellen’s PEI teammate Tommy Ling had a great showing as well, placing 5th is his 50m race. Other Special Olympics PEI members at the World Games include Callum McEwan in figure skating; Chef de Mission Charity Sheehan; Mission Staff Genna Phelan; and Communications Liaison Sarah Profitt-Wagner.
