Premier Dennis King issued a statement Saturday night in response to U-S President Donald Trump signing a 25-percent tariff order on all Canadian imports, with the exception of 10-percent on all energy. King says the tariffs pose a serious risk to
Canadian industries, including those that are the backbone of PEI’s economy—our farmers, fishers, manufacturers, and exporters. King says that on Saturday night he convened the PEI Cabinet Committee on U-S Relations, which includes Deputy Premier and Agriculture Minister Bloyce Thompson; Finance Minister Jill Burridge; Economic Development, Innovation and Trade Minister Cory Deagle; and Fisheries, Tourism, Sport and Culture Minister Zack Bell. The Premier says those Ministers will be working with their departments and their stakeholders between now and Tuesday to share information and ensure PEI’s response is
strong.
Premier King says PEI will not let what he calls the unfair trade barriers go unanswered, and that Team Canada is united, and there will be a strong
and coordinated response. King says the necessary steps will be taken to protect jobs, support
businesses, and ensure our industries remain competitive.
