Canada’s top doctor has her eye on H-5-N-1 bird flu for the new year. It’s an emerging virus carried by wild birds that had its first human case in Canada this year and has been on the rise globally. At the same time, Dr. Theresa Tam is closely monitoring measles– a virus that was eliminated in this country more than two decades ago– but is making an accelerated resurgence. There have been close to 170 measles cases in Canada in 2024, compared to 59 cases last year.
