PEI RCMP is asking all Islanders to avoid driving if at all possible. If you do have to go out, they ask you to drive for the conditions – slow down and leave extra space.
There are Winter Storm Warnings for both Kings and Queens Counties , while Prince County is under a Blowing Snow Advisory.
For Kings and Queens Counties, hazardous winter conditions are expected through until Monday, and it will be about noon before we really see diminished winds.
Environment Canada says an additional 15 to 35 cm of snow is possible for central and eastern PEI, combined with maximum wind gusts of up to 80 km/h. The highest snowfall amounts are expected over eastern PEI where up to 35 cm are possible, while parts of Queens county may only see 15 cm by Monday morning.
For Prince County, poor visibility in snow and blowing snow can be expected to continue with maximum wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h. Another 15 to 20 cm of snow is possible through tomorrow in parts of Prince County.
Plows are out but blowing and drifting snow is making it very difficult with whiteout conditions and heavy drifting being reported. Many main roads are a single lane.
Prince County roads are snow covered and slippery with lots of blowing snow. It is worse in areas of East Prince than it is in West Prince. Visibility is just fair in areas of East Prince.
The RCMP says Route 2 between Brookfield and Greenvale is down to one lane. The west bound lane is closed due to a 2 vehicle collision. One of the vehicles is a fuel truck, but there is no damage to the vehicle and none of the contents is spilling. There are no injuries reported and neither a fire department nor Island EMS are being dispatched. Motorists are asked to avoid this area, as it is going to be several hours before the road reopens.
UPEI will be closed for the day . The AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital will remain open for emergencies.
All Holland College locations will be closed today.
