Premier Dennis King invited the chiefs of the Mi’kmaq First Nations, Indigenous community members and the public to the provincial administration building yesterday to acknowledge Truth and Reconciliation Day.
The ceremony began with a short reflection followed by a lowering of the flags to honour the lives of Indigenous Peoples affected by the residential school system.
After sundown, the building was lit in orange to recognize the day.
King says meaningful reconciliation can only be achieved through learning about the history of residential schools, listening to the stories of survivors, and acknowledging ongoing impacts of the discrimination.
Premier King and Chiefs Darlene Bernard and Junior Gould will celebrate the fifth annual Treaty Day with the raising of the Grand Council Flag at 10 Sunday morning in the courtyard behind the Shaw Building in Charlottetown.
