Ottawa is buying a temporary replacement ferry for the MV Holiday Island and the Northumberland Ferries service between Wood Islands and Caribou. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement as he was joined by a number of Ministers, including Cardigan MP and Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay. The federal Governments says it will purchase the Norwegian ferry, the MV Fanafjord, to replace the MV Holiday Island until a permanent replacement is built. The MV Holiday Island was forced out of service by a fire last year. Design work for a new permanent replacement ferry is underway, with delivery expected as early as 2028.
