The PEI Fishermen’s Association is concerned about DFO’s closure of the mackerel fishery for the rest of 2023.
Federal Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray announced the closure last week due to dwindling amounts of mackerel in the Atlantic.
The PEIFA says the decision comes late in the year after recommendations were made in March. Mackerel is an important bait fishery and a timelier announcement was expected.
PEI fishermen don’t see the rationale in the decision as the US continues to fish mackerel but the fishery is shutting down in Canada.
