Northumberland Ferries says service between Wood Islands and Caribou is suspended for what will likely be the next few weeks. The ferry company had to cancel crossings over the weekend and through until at least Wednesday because of a technical problem. However, in an update issued on Monday, Northumberland Ferries announced that efforts to fix the issue over the weekend were not successful and the required has been ordered but it must be manufactured. The estimated time for the new part is three to four weeks. As a result, service between Wood Islands and Caribou has been cancelled until the part has been manufactured, delivered, installed and tested. As a precaution, Northumberland Ferries is not accepting bookings for the next three weeks up to and including July 10th. The second vessel for the peak season, MV Saaremaa 1, is currently in drydock in Quebec and is scheduled to arrive in PEI in early July. Northumberland Ferries says it recognizes the impact of this situation and is working closely with the manufacturer and doing all they can to fast track the delivery of the part. All customers with reservations on sailings up to July 10 will be contacted to arrange a refund or re-book for alternate dates.
