A rally called “No Room for Hate” was held on Friday at noon outside the PEI legislature at the Coles Building to support the trans community. Over 200 attended the rally which was held in response to a flyer that was circulated asking parents to protest the province’s gender identity guidelines by keeping children home from school on Friday. The PEI government presented the guidelines over a year ago which was designed to ensure student’s gender identities and sexual orientation be respected.
The flyer called it the “sexualization of children.”
The school guidelines have the backing of the PEI Human Right’s Act.
Premier Dennis King says there is no intention to change the policy. He also said the flyers were harmful and cowardly.
