In the provincial legislature on Wednesday, the Third Party Greens raised questions concerning $750-thousand in the budget for having police school resource officers in schools. There had been school resource officers in place at Colonel Gray and Charlottetown Rural High Schools for a number of years until last year when they were removed to be used elsewhere in the community. On Wednesday, Opposition Green MLA Karla Bernard questioned why money was budgeted for resource officers when there are calls instead for mental health and social supports for students. Education Minister Natalie Jameson says school staff and students they spoken with have supported bringing back resource officers, and government in the meantime is hiring more school counsellors for mental health support for students.
