Borden-Kinkora MLA Jamie Fox says Islanders will not only be facing a new carbon tax on July 1st but an added Federal Fuel Charge that is being passed on to refineries. Irving Oil says it will mean a 14.3 cent hike in gas, 17.3 cents for diesel and furnace oil and 10 cents on propane that will be passed on to consumers. It will be applied to all taxable fuel sales.
Fox says along with a 3.5 cent carbon tax, it will amount to 20 cents more per litre for diesel and home heating oil and 17 to 18 cents per litre on gasoline starting next month.
He wonders how Islanders, who have to travel long distances each day in many cases, will afford that hike. He says it will also affect farmers and fishermen
Fox says the Atlantic premiers including Dennis King appealed to the federal minister about the hardship the additional tax on refining will bring when they met last month.
