There was a fatal three-vehicle crash in Springfield on Friday night. The RCMP says the preliminary investigation shows that a car and minivan travelling in opposite directions collided on Route 2 near Rattenbury Road, and a third vehicle went into the ditch in avoiding the collision. An 80-year-old man died at the scene, and a woman who was a passenger in his vehicle is in hospital with serious injuries. A man driving the second vehicle was sent to hospital in Halifax with life-threatening injuries. Police say no one was seriously injured in the third vehicle, which went into the ditch. RCMP, Island EMS, Kensington Fire Department, and Department of Transportation all responded to the scene. The road was closed for three hours as police investigated the incident. A traffic reconstructionist is assisting in that investigation.
