The sighting of endangered North Atlantic Right Whales near Alberton last week has prompted DFO to call for a fifteen day closure of the lobster fishery that will affect fishermen from Tignish to New London. Three grid closures that also include fishing near the Magdalen Islands will come into effect on Tuesday at 5.00 p.m. Fishermen with gear in the area must have it removed. DFO will search the area for 9 to 15 days by air. If the whales remain in the area during that time the fishery will be closed until November 15th. If there are no sightings, the lobster fishery can resume in LFA 24.
The PEI Fishermen’s Association website has all the information.
