Bill Schurman who was a Community and Recreation Director in Summerside & Amherst and general manager with the Moncton Wildcats in the Q after spending time as president of the Lewiston Maineiacs & UPEI athletic director passed away this week at age 67 after being treated for a brain tumour the last few months. Bill played a major role in making Summerside a sports hosting city in Canada. He played on two Summerside Jr. hockey champions in the 1970’s and also with the Islanders baseball team that won a silver medal in the senior nationals in 1977. That team was inducted into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame 2016. He was hired as general manager of the Eastlink Centre last fall.
Tributes are coming in for Schurman. Former Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart says his longtime friend was talented in many ways. He says he was one of the best at promoting and organizing events for the city and wore his heart on his sleeve for his hometown.
Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10.30 at the East Prince Funeral Home in Summerside. Visiting hours on Monday from 3-7 p.m.
