Island voters will go to the polls today in the provincial election. The Progressive Conservatives of Premier Dennis King are seeking to keep a majority government after calling the election March 6th. At dissolution, the Tories held 15 of the legislature’s 27 seats, the Green Party had eight seats and the Liberals had four. The campaign’s main issues have been the state of health care, housing shortages and climate change.
The polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the 27 districts. All the information on where you can vote is located on that Voter Information Card you received in the mail. You should take that card with you along with some I-D when you go to vote to help speed up the process.
Many eyes will be on District 17, New Haven-Rocky Point where two of the party leaders are facing off. Green Party Leader Peter Bevan-Baker is the incumbent, and among his challengers is Liberal Leader Sharon Cameron. Donalda Docherty is running for the Progressive Conservatives, Douglas Dahn for the NDP and Neil Emery for the Island Party.
PC Leader Dennis King is running in District 15 Brackley-Hunter River.. He is facing Liberal Nicole Ford, Leah-Jane Hayward of the NDP and Greg Bradley of the Green Party.
NDP leader Michelle Neill is seeking the seat in District 13 where Rob Lantz is running for the PC’s, Janice Harper for the Green Party and Sandra Sunil for the Liberals.
The Island Party has 11 candidates running in this election and there are four independent candidates.
The third and final advance poll was held last Friday. Elections PEI says that through the advance polls and mail-in ballots, more than 36,000 Islanders have cast their ballots already — which is 34.6 percent of eligible voters. The district with the highest turnout so far is District 20 Kensington-Malpeque which has a voter turnout of 43.59 per cent heading into election day.
