Former Liberal MLA and Holland College football coach Ross Young, who was born in Souris, died suddenly on Friday at age 58. He served as MLA for 1st Kings from 1991 to 1996 and followed in his father’s footsteps as an MLA. Johnny Ross Young was the MLA for 1st Kings from 1978 until his passing in 1990.
Ross Young was a businessman and had keen interest in football most of his life. He starred as a linebacker with the Mount Allison Mounties university team in the early 1980’s where he was team captain, an All-Conference all-star for three years and won numerous team awards. He was an assistant coach with Mount A in their first appearance in the Vanier Cup national championship in 1984. He also was head coach of the Holland College Hurricanes from 2016 to 2018. Young also spent many years in minor football in PEI. His son John Ross was one of his players with the Hurricanes when he was assistant coach in 2015. Funeral arrangements will be announced. Premier Dennis King has offered his condolences to the family.
