Six crew members had to be rescued after their crab boat grounded and started taking on water off Red Point on Saturday afternoon. The vessel hit Red Point Rock which local fishermen have considered dangerous for a long time. The crew apparently had some electronic problems on board as they were coming toward shore in fog when they struck the formation.
The Cat Sass was towed into Souris Harbour by another fishing boat, the Cape Spry with the aid of three other fishing vessels. The operation took several hours.
Efforts were made to pump water out of the crab boat on the way into port.
Two crew members had to be checked by Island EMS paramedics after being waist deep in water.
The RCMP, the Souris Fire Department, and the Coast Guard along with local fishermen all assisted.
Kings District RCMP Constable Bob Honkoop says the crab boat was grounded for about two hours but there were no injuries.
The Cat Sass was listing as it approached the harbour and was damaged.
Several people on the wharf helped unload the catch of crab and gear before the vessel was loaded onto a boat hauler.
The snow crab season ends today.
