On Grey Cup weekend, the proposed new Halifax CFL franchise has chosen the name – the Atlantic Schooners for the team that could debut in 2021.
The names Storm, Convoy and Admirals were also considered.
Schooners beat out the other considerations.
The Maritime Football Partnership is pursuing the bid and has its eye on a parcel of land on the east side of Halifax harbour for a 24,000 seat facility.
The price tag is between $170 and 190 million.
Public financing will be needed.
So far over 5,000 people have put down $50 season ticket deposits.
The CFL is quite interested in expanding to a 10th franchise in Halifax.
It’s hoped fans will attend the games from all over Atlantic Canada including Prince Edward Island.
